I had a powerful experience with this concept a year ago as I was dealing with the painful aftermath of cancer surgery. I wasn't able to "go out" to serve anyone because I was too ill. I'd heard someone on the radio (I only caught part of the show, so I don't know who it was) say that instead of praying for oneself, pray for others going through what you are. I decided to try it. I prayed for everyone who was facing the same situation I was that we'd all find comfort and healing. An amazing thing happened. Not only did I feel my pain ease dramatically, I felt a deep connection with those others for whom I'd prayed. Because of that connection and my prayer of faith, I felt stronger and knew that in some way they were becoming stronger too. Service does not need to be huge. Sometimes, as you said, it can be a smile - or a prayer for someone else. This is so true!
